Adult Sunday School 2012-2013
We are currently offering four classes:
Proverbs: Honing Your Skills for Godly Living Led by Mike Young
For some people the book of Proverbs seems like just a random collection of trite, out-of-date sayings. But, as one author writes, “Proverbs is one of the most comprehensive statements of divine wisdom in all literature.” When we think of biblical wisdom, many of us think of people who had special gifts of wisdom from God—King Solomon, Joseph with Pharaoh, or Daniel—but Scripture is clear that wisdom is something that we should all pursue with all our energy, not just a spiritual gift for a few. Paul tells us that he wishes that we would be “wise as to what is good and innocent as to what is evil” (Rom. 16:19). “Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil” (Eph. 5:15-16). Wisdom is a lifetime pursuit, and passing it on to the next generation is equally important (Deut. 4:9).
In this class we will look at what biblical wisdom really is, how to gain it and discover its many facets. Most importantly, we will see how Proverbs actually points us to the author of wisdom, Jesus Christ. Rather than wade through the book one verse at a time, we will go through it topically. We’ll look at various areas of life, including business dealings, family matters, integrity, justice, leadership, friendships, and much more. The class will have a discussion format, using handouts each week with the verses from Proverbs that relate to the topic under discussion. This class will be beneficial for men and women, old and young. Come join us!
The Westminster Shorter Catechism Led by Dan Kasey
Who is God? What is the meaning of life? What is the remedy for sin? The Westminster Shorter Catechism will ask and answer similar questions. This class will be full of lively discussion
on the answers to 107 questions found in the Shorter Catechism and any other questions the class would like to ask. The goal for the class is to draw us to a closer relationship with our Creator by growing in knowledge and love for God’s Word.
A Woman God Can Lead Led by Sally Abbott
In this discussion class for women we will explore the stories of women in the Bible using Alice Mathews’ book A Woman God Can Lead as our curriculum. Our emphasis is on how to apply the simple truths of the Bible in our everyday lives as we examine the way God worked in the lives of these women.
Topics that we will cover:
Eve: How to See Long-term Consequences in Little Decisions
Rahab: How to Choose for God in Your Culture
Deborah: How to Lead When Called by God to Do So
Ruth: How to See God in the Dailiness of Life
Huldah and Miriam: How to Use Your Spiritual Gifts Wisely
Esther: How to Use Power to Benefit Others
The Proverbs 31 Woman: How to Keep Your Priorities Straight
Group prayer is an important component of this class. We will pray as a group approximately every three weeks throughout the year. Women of any age are welcome to join us. The cost of the book is $12. Copies will be available the first week of class.
Thru the Bible Led by Gary Shaw & Larry Black
We can only come to know God intimately and mature in our walk by being in His Word continually. What better way to be in the Word of God than to be involved in a well-structured study that goes through the whole Bible, with free study helps and choice of media commentary? This class is for all those who want to gain a more comprehensive and integrated understanding of God’s Word. We don’t skip over the “hard sayings” of Scripture when we encounter them.
Thru the Bible offers a structured Bible-reading program that covers the entire Bible in a five-year cycle. You can jump into this study at any time. Daily reading schedules and “Notes and Outlines” for each book of the Bible are available from Thru the Bible Radio ministry in advance of each book study. The readings are supplemented by 30-minute Bible study radio broadcasts, 5 days a week, with J. Vernon McGee (WROL, WVNE, and WEZE). Free audio podcasts and 5-year MP3 downloads are available as well. McGee is an engaging teacher, combining wisdom with down-to-earth wit. His commentary links the daily reading to other parts of God’s Word for context and clarification.
This year we will pick up our study in 2 Samuel and Kings before moving into one of the most profound and deep books of the New Testament, Romans. Over the course of the year we will alternate between Old and New Testament books, including Paul’s letters to the church at Corinth and the Old Testament books of Esther and Job.
